*NEW* 12th August 2009 - 2009 Summary

The school started its second year on the 7th January 2009 and has children from Standards (years) 1-7. The final S8 will come up next year from the younger years. We now have 6 government qualified teachers at the school, which is a fantastic result for such a new school, and the community contribute funds towards 2 volunteer teachers. The project pays for the salaries for a librarian, gardener and nightwatchman with the hope that in the next year or two the school will be creating enough revenue to fund these positions itself.

We have installed solar panels on the library and teacher’s houses that will encourage use of the library and help teachers do their work until late. We are preparing to build more pit- latrines this year and will be setting up a new water system using a submersible pump, holding tank and gravity flow system. This will provide safe and reliable water to the houses, the ablution blocks and to the school. Watch this space!

Our sports programme has started with the procurement of some excellent and spacious land behind the school for the sports facilities. They include a football pitch, and volley and netball courts. Next year we will be building a little sports centre with a showering area and changing rooms that will allow far away teams to come to Chisala and play. We hope that this project will help promote sport and good health in the area.

We are looking at helping to promote teacher training schemes, literacy schemes and workshops in informal education in conjunction with local government.
